Hello from New Hampshire

Hello all, 

My name is Jane and I am looking forward to begin my journey towards a teaching certificate in Mindful Meditation.  I have been meditating for about 6 years.  It started as a component of my yoga practice, but grew as a part of my recovery after knee placement surgery 3 years ago.  Being a person who cannot tolerate opiate-based pain meds, I turned to meditation to help with pain relief, sleep and emotional struggles.   This has further allowed me to deepen my practice a little bit, but I have a long way to go.  My journey of using meditation as a pain reliever and surgical rehab tool has made me realize that there are so many people who could benefit from meditation in this way.  I live in a rural part of NH, but with strong community resources for health.  There is a community hospital and many private practices of yoga, Reiki, massage, etc.  However, there are few options for people to learn about and/or practice meditation together.  My dream is to help others navigate the struggles we face as we age, or go through surgery, or to simply feel more grounded --- and to help me to deepen my own practice as well!

Nice to meet you Jane!   I too have benefited from the therapeutic aspect of mindfulness regarding chronic fatigue and pain.   I also look forward to serving others with tools on how meditation can relieve pain and suffering in all domains: physical, emotional, and spiritual...

Welcome @Jane Bjerklie-Barry! It's lovely to have you here, and thank you so much for this introduction. Mindfulness and meditation as they relate to pain is an area I have little experience with, though I'd love to get your insights regarding any tips you might have on how I can better manage migraines. I don't get migraines often (only twice in the past year and a half), but when I do I really struggle to be present with the pain.

    • I was fortunate to be introduced to Rebirthing-Breathwork when I was 19 y/o, and that was 30 years ago. It changed my life, I was starting to drink excessively, and it was either keep drinking or Breathwork. I glad I chose the second.  Over the year, I practiced and got certified in different Breathwork modalities,  Holotropic Breathwork, Rebirthing, Transformational, Vivation, etc. They all have something in common, and that is Conscious Connected Breathing, connecting the inhale and the exhale without a pause.  It’s very powerful, it’s active, and it’s safe. It’s allowing the life force to take over, allowing me to be one with the Divine, knowing that I’m always safe. It’s having an experience that I am one with it, the all. 
    • Hi everyone, I will soon be starting a course with Isa Gucciardi and so will be reading her book, 'Coming to Peace.'     • @Rachel - thank you for sharing your blog. I read it and much of it resonated with me - from the blend of emotions that arise in response to the world to our fundamental interconnectedness and in-between. A couple of things that I'd like to share more about in response to your words: You wrote, "Perhaps it will come in the form of my own children and their awareness and contributions," which touches on something I often reflect on. That is, we cannot know the downstream consequences of our actions, and children are a wonderful example of this. Let's say we raise a child and through our teachings, they develop a deep commitment to the soil... or to animals... or to humans, whatever it may be. They will go out into the world and bring that with them, adding their own heart to it, expressing that love and commitment in their own way. And then they may have children, sharing the same teachings and values. In this way, we can see that the ripple is infinite - and, it can be conceptualized in all forms of relationship, not just parent-child relationships. When we envision our actions in this way, we can see that everything matters, even the smallest acts of kindness, forgiveness, generosity. I also like how you note some of the different forms that mindfulness and compassion can take for you. I think this is such an important reminder - that we can each contribute mindfully in our own ways. And again, as you said, the fruits of those mindful contributions could be known or unknown.
