This week's question asks:

What can you approach today with a beginner's mind?

In theory, everything can be approached with a beginner's mind. From waking up in the morning to doing the dishes to talking with a friend, we can approach any daily interaction with openness and a lack of preconception. This question invites us to name a couple of things that we can approach today without assumptions, preconceived ideas, or expectations.

Hello to all.

I plan to go for a long nature walk today and take beginner's mind with me.  To notice the sights, sounds, smells, feelings anew makes the experience that much fresher.

I am also working with a series of Shamatha meditations and am sitting with the intentions of relaxation, stability, and clarity.  As these are new meditations for me, I am bringing a sense of openness and curiosity to them, which I find has (thus far) deepened my time on the cushion.

Hello Rachel and all others here! I hope this Monday is meeting you well.

Today I will bring a beginner's mind to my walk as well. I take the dogs to the forest each day, and though I know the paths very well, I will be mindful to pay attention as if they were new - unfamiliar. I can already imagine that this will lead me to exploring new corners of the forest I haven't seen (or don't see frequently).

I think interacting with and in nature is a wonderful place to bring our beginner's mind.  I read an article some months ago where the author spoke of watching her dog outside, doing what dogs do- sniffing, stopping, investigating, listening.  When I let my dog out back or take her for a walk, I watch her using her dog form of beginner's mind- nothing but curiosity, joy, and wondering.  She serves as an excellent reminder to see and experience even the familiar things with fresh senses.

Animals have so much wisdom to offer. Trailing off from the theme of the beginner's mind, I love observing how very much 'in their body' my dogs are. Every time they get up from lying down, they stretch. They shake, they run, they move - and they also know how to relax deeply! They're snoring away as I type this...

I can see what you are saying about our species, but I try to think that because we are here, we are natural and there is a purpose for us. We just need to figure out what that is on a collective scale. 💖
    • Thank you so very much Rachel. Your words highlight for me the complexity of things and the frequent co-existence of paradoxical emotions. It can be difficult to put our finger on what is going through the mind, heart, and body since these feelings are transient. In one moment, hope. In the next, anger or cynicism. You have highlighted your own experience of multidimensionality this week beautifully.  And this. Yes! Words are incredibly powerful. And poetry is a unique vessel that brings words directly into heart and soul. My own mind today has been shifting between focused and scattered. For periods of time I have been concentrated on my work and on my practice (mantra, self-compassion, and journaling today). And during other periods of the day, well, my mind has been a little bit all over the place.  One thing that helped to put my mind at ease today was when one of my dogs sauntered over to me and sat in front of me, staring up at me with her dark brown eyes. In that moment, the planning/worrying/anxious mind just melted away and I tuned back into the present moment. I held her and an immense wave of gratitude washed over me. It helped me to remember what matters most in life - love.
