Netflix series "The Midnight Gospel"

Recommended Posts

The Netflix eight-part series "The Midnight Gospel" delves heavily into mindfulness, meditation, and spiritual and personal growth. It presents an animated story of a space traveller and podcaster set to a score drawn from interviews with mindfulness teachers and other people of interest. The animation can be bizarre, to put it mildly, and I think that is one of the real points of interest: namely, how even profound spiritual orientations seem to filter and experience reality from a framework or perspective that neglects or overlooks things of alarming proportions. I put this topic under "Communicating Mindfully" because our perspectives can interpose a barrier of attentional blindness or deafness between us and others. It reminds me of the psychological experiment "A Gorilla in the Midst." The ending of the series is profound and beautiful. I'm curious what others think about the series?

Thanks for starting this conversation! I haven't yet watched it but I do intend to.

And as for this comment about our perspectives interposing barriers, it reminds me of a process I recently learned about called the Ladder of Inference. It describes our individual thinking process and highlights how we so often arrive at decisions that are a result of the specific data we select, the way we process that data, our biases, and so on. And I absolutely agree that this can occur even where someone has profound spiritual knowledge or wisdom.
