The one breath exercise was amazing to me. I have dried deep breathing before to no avail. This actually put me to sleep.

DAY 1   Doing the breath exercise is not new to me.  It is very relaxing.  I do this often to put myself to sleep at night.  But meditation is done as awaken.  My body responds by letting tension go, yawning, eyes watering.  I am less anxious or overwhelmed for the day.  I can easily determine what to do next instead of thinking of so much at once.  I have a much easier day.  Less stress.

Day 2 Breathing exercise was a tiny bit apprehensive.  Holding between breathing in and out I begin to feel tingling, it seems like a rush of energy.  My ears are ringing.  It feels pretty good, refreshing.  I do this type of thing when I go to sleep.  I wear a C-pap machine and this is how I tend to breathe. The three mindful breaths.  This was late in the day so I will try again tomorrow before eating. 

In Chinese medicine the first thing we teach is the belly breathing.  It is difficult to do.  I like using the music from Zen Wellness that give a ring tone every 4 counts.  One of the Master Teachers and his wife do the music and sing.  This has helped me slow down my thinking.  I used to get real messed up because it was like my brain was faster than my mouth and I couldn't get things said in time.  

I can feel the tension in my neck, the aches and pains of fibromyalgia and unsettled stomach release and relax.  Thank you for pointing this out again.  This is great to get back in the swing of things.  I used to do 4 hours a day.  1 hour  standing practice, 20 min movement, 40 min meditation.  30 min. read, and 45 min study for class testing in April immersion.

Thank you for guiding. I like this challenge. 

I realized that we are breathing even do not knowing how? I felt it today when I started to breath under the control of someone. And was really confused am I breathing? Am I breathing right or not? Even I felt lack of oxygen. and as I am not breathing. It was really challenging to  me. 

And as you advised I will try before my meal once.

Slowing myself down to focus on a complete breath is so powerful to me. No matter what the situation or how rattled, stressed or out of control I feel this simple drawing in of my focus to the breath in my body anchors me. It leaves me feeling calm, focused and in control. ❤️

Day2: 3 Mindful Breaths. Today I appreciate the “prep” work of relaxing into your seat, easing tension, becoming more present BEFORE actually mindfully looking at your breath. I think this is the piece I have been neglecting when trying to meditate on my own. I would sit, close my eyes and immediately take a look at my breath. I quickly became agitated, uncomfortable and impatient then quit, thinking “Phrew! Got that out of the way...what’s next?” Today, my 3 breaths flowed easily and I found it fascinating to really notice what was happening, especially the transitions between inhaling and exhaling. Lovely.

That's wonderful @Alshattuck40! Yes, I think the 'settling in' part is really important - just taking a few moments for open awareness, easing down, softening the body, etc. 

And as per your previous note: I also find such power in the breath. Lately, my meditation practice has been more... fluid, I guess I'd say. However, the other morning I set the intention to exclusively watch the breath - no mantras, no focusing on any other part of the body. And it was a wonderfully grounding and centred session.

@Alshattuck40Just when you thought you had no control!  Yes, you do have control of things.  I feel in just doing the breath mindful meditations, knowing you control something.  Especially yourself, bring the rest of the uncontrolled world, environment not so bad.  This helps to regulate the ease of presence.  Mindfulness also bring you to the present.  It is happening now.  and YOU control it.  You are a very powerful human.

    • I miss my hugs  and I think this should be a reminder for me as well to give and get a hug from one. You are right about the image-flung out and crazy hippie tree huggers. We are the ones who get what is real though. Enjoy your arboreal hug.  I started this early and came back after my walk. I had a wonderful tree hug and had a hard time letting go.
    • Considering the tragedy that occurred on Monday of the police killing of George Floyd, I have relied on mindfulness to keep myself in a state of relative calm. I can barely watch the video but I feel that as a citizen I need to be informed of the horror of the incident, because I think that the US tends to whitewash the history of our cruelty to black people, indigenous people, and other minorities. It is too easy to look away from these police killings; to minimize or rationalize the violence. I belong to a movement in Minneapolis called Humanize my Hoodie.  Following is their mission from their website www.humanizemyhoodie.com The Humanize My Hoodie Movement originated from a demand to end the killing of Black and Indigenous People across the world. As descendants of slaves, we recognize how hoodies have been used to amplify the myth of Black criminality. Our mission is to debunk that stereotype by designing revolutionary campaigns for Black and Indigenous People of Color to be HUMANIZED, not criminalized. Part of being mindful for me is being involved in activities that feed my soul. That includes Humanize my Hoodie, and Path to Freedom, which is about teaching mindfulness and life skills to prisoners. I'm passionate about sharing the gifts I've received in life to those less fortunate. This is not about being righteous, it's about the compassion and humanity that encompass the very core of mindfulness and being present. If we are in our bodies and aware of our true nature, the desire to give and contribute is as automatic as breathing.   
    • I agree with both of you, and thank you for quoting the brilliant Brene Brown. I actually had to opportunity to meet her when she gave a talk in Minneapolis, and she is down-to-earth and just lovely. I always defined guilt to my clients as the nagging feeling you might get after you do something that goes against your values. In this way, it can be useful, because it can keep you from repeating an action that is not helpful (such as stealing a candy bar.) However, holding onto guilt is not productive and a waste of mental energy. I defined shame similar to Brene, and noted that it is typically a sense of being a bad or even evil person, which is internalized in childhood when the message is given, typically by a care giver, that there is something wrong with the child. The message can be given directly, ("there is something wrong with you, you're an awful child!") or indirectly, such as when a child is a victim of abuse, since a young child is by nature egocentric and doesn't understand that abuse is not his/her fault.  I believe that shame is the source of addiction and other compulsive behaviors, and that is takes a lot of work to heal, but it is possible. Mindfulness is certainly an excellent strategy since it is about acceptance, letting go of ego-attachments, and living in the moment. I think therapy is usually necessary too, in order to process trauma and incorporate all aspects of one's identity into a healthy self-image.

    • Thanks for sharing @Gene Williams! This reminds me of something I read in Brené Brown's book 'Daring Greatly'. In it, she differentiates between guilt and shame, explaining that guilt is the feeling 'I did something bad' whereas shame is the feeling 'I AM bad'. Here's a little more from her blog on the topic: "Based on my research and the research of other shame researchers, I believe that there is a profound difference between shame and guilt. I believe that guilt is adaptive and helpful – it’s holding something we’ve done or failed to do up against our values and feeling psychological discomfort. I define shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging – something we’ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection. I don’t believe shame is helpful or productive. In fact, I think shame is much more likely to be the source of destructive, hurtful behavior than the solution or cure.
