  1. Thank you, I am glad you appreciated this video. I am participating in Path to Freedom, to bring mindfulness teaching to prisoners. I believe it can make such a difference, and that is has been such a disservice to prisoners that they have not been exposed to rehabilitative programs such as this.   4. I had a 5-minute breathing meditation on an iPod I carried in my shoulder briefcase last week. I took the time to listen and meditate before a charged conversation with someone. I chose a quiet spot inside a building with a window which looked out onto a sunny harbor. That view alone "set the stage." Then, basking in the warmth of the sun and listening, I let my concerns about the upcoming talk dissolve. After the meditation ended, I simply sat and watched seagulls soaring above the building outside. The combination of guided meditation, sunshine, and peaceful view were very helpful in b

  8. When I was young, I really didn't have an aspiration to grow up and do or be something. I was honestly just happy to be a kid. I think it was because the future was terrifying and I didn't want any responsibilities, or the burden to have to live up to a dream. Little known fact about me is that I can roller skate really well, I went with my Dad 3 times a week for over 10 years. Also, I can dance my butt off on skates, but am terrified to dance on a dancefloor.   13. Share a little more about yourself and let us know something that most people don't know about you. For instance... What did your childhood self yearn to be when he/she/they grew up? When was the last time you laughed until you cried? What was your biggest mistake turned lesson? What are you afraid of, big or small? What unique quirks do you have? This list of questions is by no means exhaustive of where this can go. Use your imagination to dig for something wild/surprising/unusual or share something totally 'normal' (whatever normal is) and relatable.

  14. Thank you for the open and honest sharing @MariaDe. First, let me just say that it is wonderful you notice this tendency within yourself. It is easy to simply act out on these feelings without reflecting on them; it takes courage to acknowledge these sorts of things and begin to address them honestly. I don't know how much advice I can give, but one thing I will say is that for me, it is has been helpful to make friends with my aloneness - my fears of being alone, my fears of being abandoned, etc. This has involved quieting the mind and just allowing myself to feel the somatic experience

  15. There was a quote from John Kabatt-Zinn on Day 70 of Mindfulness Exercises. He said that while mindfulness is said to be at the "heart of Buddhism" it is not about Buddhism but simply about concentration. However, there is a real danger in divorcing the two. Mindfulness is being used, reportedly, to improve the ability of sharpshooters to kill their "targets" by armed forces. I realize those targets are probably trying to kill those who shoot to kill them. Somehow, there is still a violation of anything Buddha would ever have wanted for Mindfulness to help with by this type of use. If it is on

  18. I have been wandering around the last few years because the first 50 years of my life were done witnessing, making mistakes and learning. Finally, I have reached accomplished. 30 years of journals with struggles and progress now can be put out. With 3 courses and 3 websites, I feel very comfortable with helping others. As I've been watching the news and scrolling through social media over the past couple of months, I've noticed certain divides expanding: the divide between the right and the left, between lockdown advocates and lockdown protesters, between those that follow mainstream news and those that follow alternative news sources. Staying at home with my husband and not working makes me feel vulnerable: I'm not making money, I'm not being a psychologist and helping people (which I'm realizing was a role I was too attached to and defined myself by), I'm having to sit still with myself, and I'm having to spend more quiet time with my husband. A few days ago I heard The Dhamma teacher Dawn Neal tell the story of her little niece being angry, pounding her fists on Dawn's thighs which were as high as the little girl could reach, and yelling in anger, "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you." When I worked with clients and taught meditation, I always explained in detail what meditation was before beginning the process, since many were scared of anything new, particularly anything having to do with relaxation. Also, I always reminded them that they were free to keep their eyes open, which many people did, at least at first. I found that asking people to focus on their breath often backfired, since traumatized individuals typically breathe shallowly and can get caught up in doing it "right." My environment was always very physically safe growing up but spiritually and emotionally it was constricting. As I moved through my teenage years and into adult life, I still held on to a lot of the 'good girl' conditioning that made me feel 'wrong' or 'bad' for expressing my feelings and needs (and to some degree, still do).   26. I wasn't sure which category to post this in, and choose trauma since it relates to disassociation, which I know can be a pitfall of certain mindfulness teachings. I want to bring up the topic of how becoming a "passive observer" of one's life and oneself can lead to constant self-monitoring, disconnection and withdrawl, and the question of how to avoid this, mitigate this? Running a google search will bring up countless accounts of those who have been harmed by mindfulness (in my opinion, by the way mindfulness was presented to them) in serious ways, such as disassociation, depersonalization,

  28. I think this is an important topic as well. As a psychologist, I specialized in working with individuals with trauma, and many were on the spectrum of dissociative disorders. I learned various grounding techniques when I saw that they were dissociating, such as asking them to name 5 things they saw, 3 scents in the air, 5 sounds they could hear, the taste in their mouth, 3 things they could feel, and getting them in their body. I did use mindfulness with these clients, but was very aware of their body language and level of awareness. Some people with dissociative identity disorder can benefit

  29. I have taught in business settings. Usually to people with high pressure jobs and a lot on their plate. I have focused on teaching them that Mindful singletasking is actually much more efficient than "multitasking" which is really just task switching. I also put a lot of emphasis on making sure that all of the Doing that has to happen throughout the day is Mindfully rooted in Being.

  32. I'm not a Zen Buddhist but I always appreciated the political and spiritual engagement of many Zen Buddhists like Thich Nhat Hanh. I feel like dealing with inner peace and actively participating in political and social life and standing up to injustice is not exclusive - it's actually one and the same thing. I think if we look at the noble eight-fold path, it includes right action, and that's not just "inner" action. Unless our morality translates into our lives and if we don't stand up for what's right then we aren't really living our values and I then see them as pretty devoid of meaning. At

  37. @Tempus Hi, I do have challenges with to integrate mindfulness into my daily life , seem like sometimes / many times just goes out of the window and I'm mindless ... I meaning I`m on auto pilot, but I`m really happy when I notice that I wandered away and then I just stop for a moment and enjoy that I noticed that I noticed. I would say small steps. I also noticed that consistency is very important to my practice, I only do 10 min meditation mornings and 15 min evenings as I`m a beginner too , I feel its not about the minute its about a real quality I spend being mindful, I will be always a

  38. Awareness and integration. By this I mean -- adjusting my daily awareness to encompass more than just the routine "to do's" of life; but being aware that I will benefit by giving myself the gift of even 5 minutes of breathing meditation. Of course, for me, increasing my awareness is still a challenge, as I've only been practicing a few months. Integrating, or perhaps "weaving in" might be a better term, the discipline of practicing meditation is another aspect, though it seems to go hand-in-glove with awareness. I'm still exploring the subtle nuances of what this is for me.

  44. I completely understand that! Dr. Andrew Weil explains one simple technique that I've sometimes used before bed - 4-7-8 breathing. You can do it on your own or listen to a video where he guides you through it.     • Lovely reflections as always Rachel. I am glad this question brought you relief.  For myself, I feel called to tune into the earth - just to ground myself. We talked about the root chakra recently, and I still feel a strong call and need to reconnect with this grounding element. The past couple of weeks have been a bit challenging for me; my mind is more active than usual (which is saying something because it is usually quite active 😄). Today I am going to a pottery workshop (class 6 out of 8). I have found this craft to be hugely beneficial for my state of mind. When I am working with the clay, I am not thinking about anything else. So in a sense, this is a way for me to connect with the earth.

    • Good morning- In reading this week's prompt, I felt a tangible sigh of relief.  Like I was grateful for the gift of the question- to slow down and check in with myself.  Thank you, @Gillian Sanger. I am working through a week of study with my teacher on clearing vishuddha chakra- the throat chakra, bridge between heart and mind.  Within this work is a call to use aspects of right speech- are my words true, kind, necessary?  Also embedded here is the invitation to explore one's truth, and to speak, listen, and act from a place of truth.   It feels like I am working on attending to this in a subtle way while navigating a few challenges: with relationships and with work.  So I am sitting in meditations that support this opening, this truth between my heart and mind, and bringing extra attention to the words I am choosing in my interactions as well as the thoughts that give rise to them.  Of course, it is ongoing work- this listening for one's truth, and then speaking/acting it into being in a way that vibrates with compassion for all, including myself.     • hi Gillian I would say that TM was the begining of my search for something inside rather than waiting for something to come along which would make it ok I always felt that it was a need within that I was searching for so the start of many years of learning different methods, alternate and complimentary practices and techniques, I am reluctant to  say that I have never found it? because I have been fortunate in every other area of my life.I have a long and happy marrage , good close relationships with my children who also have fairly well balanced lives, and 7 beautiful grand children, I am  gratefull that i have been able to learn how  much my thoughts influence my feelings and behaviour.  and after 30 odd years working in the care sector I was in the position to change career when i should have been planning for retirement and join my son in building a new business, especially in these difficult times when many are having to deal with problems that none could have foreseen, yet there  is one problem which i dont seem to be able to overcome and could ruin everything for me. I am so sorry for rambling on. To answer your question, most of our meditation attempts are usually the guided ones by Tara Brach,Joe Dispenza and other positive people,but I still remember my mantra.
